Occasional Digest - a story for you

The first foal of champion racehorse Winx is tipped to break sale records as her owners confirm she will be sold at a public auction in Sydney next year.

Winx is the only horse to win 33 consecutive races in the past 50 years, including 25 Group 1 wins, notching up more than $24 million in prize money.

Her highly-anticipated filly was born in the Hunter Valley in October last year, after Winx’s stillborn tragedy in 2020.

Bloodstock auctioneers Inglis will offer the Pierro x Winx filly at its prestigious Easter Yearling Sale in April, 2024.

Inglis Bloodstock Sales chief executive Sebastian Hutch wouldn’t speculate on a price but anticipated she would attract “an extraordinary amount of attention” from around the globe.

“It’s very rare that a filly out of a mare like Winx would get offered for sale anywhere in the world,” he said.

“[She’s a horse of] definitively unprecedented quality in the context of the Australian market and very, very rare in the context of the global bloodstock market.

“It would be a mistake to think the popularity of this filly would be based exclusively on her parents, she’s a very well conformed horse in her own right.”

This year’s Inglis Easter Yearling Sale achieved a new record price paid for a filly of $1.1 million, but some industry insiders say Winx’s filly could threaten the all-time record of $5-million, paid for Black Caviar’s half-brother.

The filly will be offered on behalf of owners Peter and Patty Tighe, Woppitt Bloodstock, Elizabeth Treweeke and Rick Treweeke.

“Winx will forever hold a special place in our hearts and we are very proud of what she achieved as a racehorse and now as a mother,” Woppitt Bloodstock’s Debbie Kepitis said.

“It seems fitting that the sale will be run almost five years to the day from her final race start, which resulted in a 25th Group 1 win, in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick.”

Mr Tighe said Winx had given the partnership “unexplainable joy”.

“It was agreed by the ownership group that by offering this filly for sale, we make available the opportunity for someone else to manage the next racing chapter of what has been a great story,” he said.

The sale will take place on April 7 and 8.

“It will be fascinating to see the extent of the interest in her and it’s a real honour for us to be part of the experience,” Mr Hutch said.
