Occasional Digest - a story for you

FRANKIE DETTORI has revealed he wants to ‘travel the world’ when he retires following his glittering 36-year career.

The hard-working 52-year-old is hoping for some down time with his wife, now his five kids are older and have left the Newmarket mansion he will rent out for £15,000 a month.

But before that the world’s most famous jockey is aiming to crown yet another amazing racing season by making it Classic win number 24 in the St Leger on Saturday.

Dettori hopes to romp home on 10-3 fav Arrest in Doncaster – the final Classic race of his time in the saddle.

The legendary Italian is currently on his well publicised retirement tour, which has thrown up Classic success and wins at all the major festivals.

And to celebrate Dettori’s final Classic race, the St Leger title sponsors BetFred have erected a giant 10ft tall retirement card in his honour.

Racegoers can pen their own messages of tribute to Dettori throughout the meeting.

Betfred have worked out that Dettori has cost the bookmaking industry as a whole over £400million in pay-outs across his previous 23 Classic victories.

And the charismatic jockey hopes the bookies will come in for another bashing on Saturday.

The card also carries a personal message from Betfred owner Fred Done – who was almost brought to his knees back in 1996 when Dettori went through with seven winners at Ascot.

Situated just outside the weighing room, the retirement card will take centre stage and provide a fitting tribute to one of racing’s most popular stars.

Betfred boss Fred Done said: “Frankie has been fantastic for racing and will leave a big hole in the weighing room when he goes.

“The 23 Classic winners have cost us a few quid but it’s been a privilege to witness the career of a legend.

“As always he’s going to be popular with the punters in the Betfred St Leger, but I would be happy to pay out on another flying dismount.”

On what the future holds, Dettori said: “I will find my feet and regroup with my wife, because my five kids have flown the nest, so we will see.

“The house is very empty at the moment, the children have to find their own life but I am very close to them and they are often coming back to the nest.

“I have seen a lot of racecourses but not a lot else of the world so I would like to travel.

“I haven’t thought too far ahead, but I know it will be a difficult period when I stop.”

Bidding to stop them will be King Charles and Queen Camilla with their horse Desert Hero.
