Northern Territory police are calling for witnesses after a pedestrian was killed in Alice Springs on Monday night.

Police said the 48-year-old woman was walking along Gap Road in front of Alice Springs Hospital before 9pm when she was struck on the road.

Several motorists swerved to avoid her, but the driver of a sedan drove over the woman and “immediately left the scene” before handing himself in, police said.

Emergency services responded and the woman was rushed to hospital in a critical condition.

She later died from her injuries.

The driver of the sedan, a 59-year-old man, is assisting police with enquiries.

Police said all events before and after the crash remained under investigation and no charges had been laid.

Detectives are calling for information from any motorists travelling north immediately before and after the incident.

Rumours of DV incident

Police said there had been speculation on social media that the woman was fleeing a domestic violence incident at the hospital prior to her being hit by the vehicle.

But Acting Southern Division Police Commander James Grey-Spence said police had monitored the woman’s movements on CCTV in the lead-up to the incident and there was no suggestion this was the case.

“There’s no basis to these claims,” he said.

“She had been in the vicinity of the hospital, but she wasn’t at the hospital for a domestic violence matter.”

The acting police commander said police were aware of an unrelated incident that “may have occurred” in the hospital car park around that time.

But he warned rumours like these could impact investigations.

“We’re really looking for high quality evidence from the community and that level of speculation doesn’t assist us in that,” he said.

Anyone with information or dashcam footage from the incident should contact police on 131 444.
