RISHI Sunak last night said he was “fired up” and wants to be PM until 2030 — despite lagging behind in the polls.

The Prime Minister said he was “hungry to win” the next vote, expected in autumn 2024.

Speaking as he flew to New Delhi for the G20 summit, Mr Sunak admitted he had been left frustrated by the dodgy concrete crisis and the escape of a terror suspect prisoner.

But he hit back at the gloomsters in his own party predicting wipeout at the next election, insisting he was still in it to win it.

He has recently made changes to his Cabinet as he prepares for an election battle and said: “I can tell you, certainly in Downing Street, we are fired up.

“As you can see, we’ve brought some new people in.

“These are very high- quality people that are joining the team because they believe that we will win.

“They are hungry to win. I am hungry to win. And they are fired up to deliver it.”

Mr Sunak had planned to return to No 10 following the summer break with a big relaunch speech.

But instead the first week has been rocked by controversies.

He is also facing two by-elections, in Tamworth and Mid Beds, with the Tories at risk of losing both.

One former cabinet minister said: “MPs are utterly depressed. I’ve been surprised at how bad things are.

“Most people have given up on the election and are just concentrating on trying to hold on to their seat.”

But Mr Sunak laughed off suggestions he is an unlucky general and insisted progress was being made on his key pledges, including lowering inflation and cutting channel boat crossings.

And he insisted he will show what he can do and win his first general election.

If that comes in January 2025 it could keep him in power until 2030.

He said: “I will show the British people what I am capable of in the time I have now before the election.

“I will be saying to them ‘give me a full term and then I’ll show what I can deliver for you’.”
