Germany has shocked the United States 113-111 in Manila to reach its first men’s FIBA Basketball World Cup final, where it will face Serbia. 

Guard Andreas Obst carried Germany with his tournament-high 24 points and six assists, including a clutch three-pointer to build a comfortable lead before his team fended off a late rally by the US.

Orlando Magic guard Franz Wagner added 22 points for Germany, while power forward Daniel Theis — who plays for the Indiana Pacers — contributed a 21-point haul.

“We played good defence, we were running around and we stayed mentally tough from first to the last guy,” Obst told reporters after the game.

Germany will play Serbia on Sunday night AEST after the third-place playoff between the US and Canada.

Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards led the US with 23 points and eight rebounds.

Fan favourite Austin Reaves provided a spark off the bench, scoring 21 points.

“The main point of the loss was just we weren’t ever able to make them feel us defensively,” US head coach Steve Kerr said.

The US, ranked second by FIBA, had finished seventh in the 2019 World Cup.

Serbia defeated Canada 95-86 to book its spot in the final.
