Expert Craig said that you should swap around your full service and your MOT so that the MOT comes first.
This may seem like strange advice, as many drivers get a full service precisely because they want to pass their MOT.
But Craig said that if you have your service later, you could end up having to pay for more repairs if your car goes on to fail its MOT.
He said that doing the MOT first ensures you will only ever have to pay for one service – whatever problems the MOT picks up.
In a TikTok clip, Craig said: “This is something that a caring garage is going to do.
“Why do we MOT the car first? Life is expensive, and not everybody can afford to pay for a massive MOT and a service as well.
“Always a good idea when doing an MOT and a service to do the MOT first so you can give the customer the best value for money and the opportunity to save it where they can.”
Not everyone was convinced by MOT mechanic Craig’s case for having your MOT first.
Andy said: “If you did your job correctly on the service you would pick up any issues and repair them before the MOT.”
Rich said: “Do the service first – it will flag up any faults before you pay for an MOT which you could fail.”
But Jack said: “He’s right. A full service doesn’t include the brake test or the emissions test – so you could fail those MOT tests after having a full service.”
It comes after an expert car manufacturer said an easy air filter DIY job will make your motor last longer – and knocks £50 off your repair bill.
Halfords has issued an urgent warning to thousands of drivers – as it’s revealed motorists pay 50 per cent more for repairs at dealerships.
