RISHI Sunak must spike Sir Keir Starmer’s guns and go to the country next May, senior Tories urge.

Fears are growing that waiting longer for a General Election will only give Labour longer to turn around their dire polling figures that show most of their top team are virtually unknown to the public.

One former Cabinet Minister told The Sun: “Waiting around for some good news is not going to work, Labour are not ready so we should use that to our advantage.”

Opposition boss Starmer reshuffled his Shadow Cabinet this week, but polling shows they have a huge mountain to climb to make an impact on the voters.

Downing Street have until January 2025 to call the poll.

Most commentators believe Sunak will wait until October next year.

The last general election was called in December 2019, as Boris Johnson called one early.

Sitting Prime Ministers have the power to call a general election early if they choose.

The contests are traditionally held on the first Thursday of May to coincide with local council votes.

There must be 25 days notice for an election, so candidates can go into campaign mode.

In order for this to happen, Parliament is dissolved and major government business suspended.
