Discount shop Poundland is opening five brand new stores this month.
The chain already opened dozens of new stores in the first half of this year.
Two of the five new stores will be opening within days, while others will be open later this month.
Here’s the full list of Poundland shops opening this month, including dates and locations:
- Pontefract – opens September 9
- Cardiff – opens September 9
- Ryde – opens September 23
- Dartmouth – TBC
- Teignmouth – TBC
A sixth store in Stafford was also meant to open on September 16, though this has been pushed back to mid-October.
Three new stores all opened shop last weekend (September 2), there were:
- Torquay – opens September 2
- Ipswich – opens September 2
- Selby – opens September 2
It comes at the same time that Poundland pulled the plug on several stores this year.
Just this week (September 5), its store in St. Helen’s closed for good.
Shoppers flocked to the store to take advantage of its closing down sales during its final day of trading.
Customers also took to social media to share their disappointment.
One wrote: It’s a shame really gonna miss this shop’.”
While another commented: “Great another shop, more jobs gone.”
In August, Poundland also pulled the shutters down on the shop in Bolton “with much regret”.
The discount chain stuck up posters signposting the closure around the shop in Middlebrook Retail and Leisure Park.
Retailers have been feeling the pinch since the pandemic while shoppers are cutting back on spending due to soaring inflation.
High energy costs and a shift to shopping online after the pandemic are also taking a toll and many high street shops have struggled to keep going.
The inability to renegotiate rents and agreements with landlords is also putting pressure on some retailers to pull out of some locations.
A number of well-known retailers including Argos, Lloyds Pharmacy and New Look have closed stores in recent months.
More recently, Wilko fell into administration putting thousands of jobs at risk.
Just yesterday (September 5), The Sun revealed a rescue of the majority of Wilko’s stores by HMV’s owner is in limbo after running into issues with some big suppliers.
Sources said that weekend negotiations between Canadian entrepreneur Doug Putman, who bought HMV in 2019, had run into problems.
Jobs cuts at Wilko’s headquarters and warehouses are already being made this week.
