A Sydney underworld figure has been arrested after allegedly spending a month on the run from police who wanted him for serious firearm and drug offences.

Ahmad Alameddine was found at an apartment complex in South Coogee on Tuesday, four weeks after allegedly fleeing when tactical officers came to his home.

Police said detectives arrived at a unit block on Bundock Street in the city’s east about 9am and saw a man jump from a window before running away.

Officers gave chase but the man could not be found.

Detectives continued to search a unit in the complex before Mr Alameddine returned to the scene later in the day.

He allegedly attempted to run from officers again but was arrested at nearby Gunmara Street about 2pm.

The 33-year-old was taken to Maroubra Police station and is due appear before Waverley Local Court on Wednesday.

The alleged fugitive was wanted on four outstanding arrest warrants.

He was charged overnight with five offences including acquire pistol-subject to firearms prohibition order, carry firearm manner likely injure person/property, acquire ammunition subject to prohibition order, hinder/resist police officer in the execution of duty, and enter included land not prescribed without lawful excuse.

Mr Alameddine had allegedly evaded police since August 3, when he jumped a fence on Narrelle Crescent, Greenacre.

Heavily armed police had arrived to search his home under a firearm prohibition order, as part of a crackdown on alleged organised crime figures in the wake of a string of shootings in Sydney.

Mr Alameddine is not accused of involvement in any shooting incidents.

Two women were arrested at the Greenacre home on August 3 and remain before the courts.

Mr Alameddine was on bail for unrelated offences at the time of the raid.

The Criminal Groups Squad led the search for Mr Alameddine and appealed for information on his location last month.
