Chelsea signing Cole is ‘strange’

Souness puzzled by Chelsea spending £42.5m on Cole

Graem Souness is baffled by Chelsea splashing £42.5million on Manchester City’s rookie midfielder Cole Palmer.

The England Under-21 star was mainly a sub at best for Pep Guardiola’s Treble winners.

In all he played 41 games for City, notching six goals and two assists.

And it’s thought Chelsea chief Mauricio Pochettino admires his versatility as he can play as a winger as well as an attacking midfielder.

Souness told The Daily Mail: “Chelsea’s decision to spend £42.5mon Cole Palmer, a 21-year-old with three Premier League starts, strikes me as strange and extremely bold.

“It might all come together for Chelsea, who are spending a fortune on players of enormous potential who one day, with a big question mark attached, might be top men for them.

“Their supporters, like all others, want instant success. After a miserable season, they will have limited patience and won’t be slow in venting their frustration. I can see where they’re coming from.”
