Melissa Pateras, a cleaning and laundry pro, shared her step by step guide to achieving gleaming white shoes in no time at all.
And while many are scared to put them into the washing machine in case they get ruined, she said it has the best results – but only if you follow some important steps first.
“Most athletic or canvas shoes can go into the machine really,” Melissa began.
“People are really nervous about that but they can go into the machine. It’s a super simple process.”
However, she maintained that preparation is key.
During an appearance and demonstration on CTV Your Morning, Melissa said: “All you’re going to do is start by getting it a little bit wet.”
She then showed how she ran each shoe individually under the tap, making them damp, and reached for a cleaning liquid and a brush.
Melissa continued: “You can use liquid dish detergent or a spray detergent – then just give it a little scrub.
“It’s getting all of the major dirt off,” as she got to work on removing the grime.
Melissa also said that you can take out the laces if desired, but that she just gives them a scrub instead.
The cleaning pro then shared how she uses a magic eraser on the side and around the toes, leaving them to soak for a little while.
Once this is done, she went on: “You’re then going to toss them into the machine.
“Add a towel or two for scrubbing, as well as noise reduction.
“You’re going to wash them on a delicate or gentle cycle.”
Then, once they come out, there are two ways in which you can dry them when you’ll see the amazing results.
Melissa explained: “If you have the time and the patience, you can air dry them.”
Alternatively, she shared her other method – and it’s very clever.
As footage of her placing them in a dryer, she explained: “I use my dryer rack, [but] if you don’t have one tie the laces together and you can hook them on the [washing machine] door and shut the door.
“That way, the shoes dry without the banging and the tumbling.
“Use a low heat when you’re doing that and they come out brand new.”
