Occasional Digest - a story for you

BIG Brother was the hit reality show that transformed members of the public from mere mortals into national stars.

But while some carved out lucrative careers, others enjoyed five minutes of fame before returning to their normal jobs.

Among them is Helen Adams, who was branded unrecognisable in photographs at a petrol station this week.

After losing out to Brian Dowling in the 2002 finals, she made a few TV appearances on shows including Loose Women, Lorraine, GMT and Ready, Steady, Cook.

Now, the Welsh TV personality is back to hairdressing but she isn’t the only one forced to return to real life.

Here we reveal the Big Brother stars who have normal jobs – from one who’s training to become an ordained church minister to another who’s an award-winning baker.

Glyn Wise was 18 years old when he appeared on Big Brother back in 2006 and was famously filmed being taught how to cook an egg.

He says his “life transformed overnight” after being in the seventh series – which ended with him losing in the finals to Pete Bennett.

After the show, Glyn went on to bag a Calvin Klein modelling gig, which he branded “madness”, and even met Catherine Zeta-Jones.

He then trained to become a teacher and after five years in the UK travelled overseas to teach in China and South East Asia, where he discovered his true calling.

Last year, he revealed he had been accepted to train for the ordinary ministry with a church in Wales and admitted it was “a dream come true”.

At the time Glyn told Wales Online: “Jesus Christ was 33 when he got crucified, and we’re the same age so let’s go for it.”

Isabelle Warburton is remembered by many Big Brother fans for obsessively applying fake tan.

And it seems to have inspired the job she pursued in the outside world after pocketing £65,000 when she won the 13th series back in 2017.

A year later, Isabelle revealed she had been “busy planning” a “one-stop shop” for all beauty needs and hoped to make customers “look wicked” and “feel really good”.

She told the Warrington Guardian: “There’s going to be a blow dry bar, nail stations, lash technicians and make-up artists. On Mondays, the studio will be closed for botox and fillers”

Isabelle, who has nearly 80,000 followers on Instagram, also has a nail business too.

Luke Anderson was the first transgender man to win Big Brother back in 2012 and received high praise from the public for ‘coming out’ on national TV.

He went on to become the Head Chef at The Pied Bull Hotel, in Chester, before deciding to launch his own bakery in North Wales in 2019.

However, Luke has admitted he struggled to keep business Cravin’ afloat due to rising energy bills and rising food prices.

On Twitter, Luke admitted he thought his bill, which had risen from £400 to £1,600 per month, “must have been a typo or error”.

Despite the struggles, Cravin’ went on win 2023 Business of the Year Award from Mold Town Council.

Rachel Rice

Rachel Rice was branded the ‘nicest’ winner of Big Brother back in 2008 – in part due to her plan to donate £10,000 of her £100,000 prize money to charity.

After the show, she made appearances on Big Brother’s Little Brother, The Sunday Night Project and T4 before leaving the limelight.

In 2008, the former child actress and model revealed she only made £5,000 after the show because she refused to do any lads’ magazines.

Now Rachel, who is married with two kids, is the head of a performing arts college in Newport according to her personal website.

Sandy Cumming

Sandy Cumming went down in Big Brother history because, after just 20 days in the house, he decided to escape due to being bored.

Bizarrely, he urinated in a bin before scaling the garden fence and jumping onto the set’s roof before fleeing on the other side.

Since his 2002 appearance, he’s tried to remain out of the limelight – at one point, even changing his name to ‘Sandy Alexander’ online to escape Big Brother fans.

Even more shockingly, 17-year-old Big Brother fan Amy Cumming discovered Sandy was the father she allegedly hadn’t seen in 11 years while watching the show with her mum.

After the show, Sandy returned to his job as a Selfridges personal shopper and stylist – little else is known about what happened next to the star.

Nadia Almada

Nadia Almada won the nation’s heart back in 2004 and the fifth series of Big Brother, bagging a cool £63,500 prize money.

She hoped to emulate the success of Jade Goody, who “made millions” from the show, but believed she was denied lucrative opportunities due to being transgender.

When Nadia’s showbiz gigs began to dwindle, she trained as a hair stylist and has spent the last 10 years cutting hair.

The TV star, who hopes to return to the spotlight, also has an OnlyFans page but insists she “wouldn’t go fully nude” on the adult platform.

Penny Ellis

Former school teacher Penny Ellis appeared on Big Brother in 2001 and courted controversy when a scene showed her naked.

She claimed to have landed “so many jobs” due to the rude moment – including promotional gigs and festival appearances.

But now, Penny has turned her back on fame to work in Morrisons – all while writing a book and doing charity work.

She told The Sun: “I am now washing up – I call myself a cutlery cleaning agent – for a national retail grocery giant but actually I’m a washer-upper in Morrisons.

“At the end of the day, I wash up in Morrisons and I’ve never been so happy. It’s the best job I’ve ever had.”

Self-confessed “Donny lass” Chloe Wilburn bagged £116,100 when she won the 16th series of Big Brother back in 2015.

The former admin worker, who’s now married and a mum, shunned the spotlight after the show and famously said she loved “being normal”.
