A search is underway for two bushwalkers missing in Tasmania’s remote south-west.
Police say the men, aged in their 60s, activated a personal locator beacon just after nine o’clock on Monday night in the Loddon Range area.
Ground crews were dispatched on Monday night but could not cross the Surprise River, which runs between the Lyell Highway and the search area.
Crews were able to get across on Tuesday morning and are continuing to search on the ground while the rescue helicopter searches by air.
Tasmania’s south-west wilderness area is a rugged mountainous region, prone to swift changes in weather.
On Monday night temperatures were relatively mild, falling to around five degrees at nearby Lake St Clair.
