Occasional Digest - a story for you

MOST Facebook users love a scroll through the pages of old school mates, distant family members, and the folks they befriended at the pub that one time.

But nobody wants to be caught in their snooping by an ill-timed screenshot.

Snapchat’s practice of notifying users when a picture or a conversation has been immortalised in a screenshot has spooked social media users for years.

And often without good reason.

Instagram, WhatsApp and Twitter don’t alert other users of screenshot’s like Snapchat does.

Facebook doesn’t either, for the most part.

While Facebook refrains from sending notifications for screenshots taken of regular posts, it doesn’t while using a certain Messenger feature.

The platform’s disappearing messages feature, known as Vanish Mode, lets users have secret conversations that self-erase after 12 hours.

Conversations had under this feature are not intended to be immortalised, and so, screenshotting them is a huge no-no.

If a screenshot captures any part of these supposedly vanishing conversations, a subtle notification emerges in-chat.

It signals that the conversation is not-so-secret after all.

And can land you in hot water with whoever else was involved in the classified exchange.

So, it’s wise to tie down the temptation to preserve these conversations in an image in your camera roll.

Otherwise you risk being caught red-handed, left rouge faced and locked out of the inner circle of trust with your friend or family member.
