Football fans stormed barricades and threw flares at Melbourne’s Federation Square which hit maximum capacity during the Matildas’ semifinal against England.
Orange smoke filled the air above the 10,000-capacity venue as a rowdy section of the crowd disturbed the largely positive atmosphere which had been enjoyed by families.
It was just moments after Sam Kerr equalised against England that some fans appeared to take the celebrations too far by lighting flares.
Fans of all ages could be seen jumping for joy at the captain’s goal before sparks flew into the crowd within seconds.
Police escorted some young men from the venue while young families were seen exiting the site.
Large screens displayed warnings that flares were prohibited at the site and those setting them off could face a $7,400 fine.
Crowds at the site had grown throughout the afternoon and organisers had announced the site had reached capacity an hour before kick-off.
Attendees were advised they could watch the game at the live site at Melbourne Rectangular Stadium but some instead broke down barriers to evade security.
One fan said he brought his 12-year-old daughter to the live site six hours prior to kick-off to ensure a good spot in front of the big screen.
Others reported leaving work early for a prime position among the thousands who were anticipated to pack into the venue on the edge of Melbourne’s CBD.
Victoria Police is yet to confirm whether fines were imposed for behaviour at the site.
