Occasional Digest - a story for you

Ohioans are heading to the polls next Tuesday to vote for one thing: A proposed state constitutional amendment that would make it harder to pass future state constitutional amendments. If Issue One is passed, all subsequent amendments in the Buckeye State would need to clear 60 percent support among voters to become law, as opposed to the 50 percent requirement now. And it would also make it harder to qualify future proposals for the ballot in the first place.

This fight is seen as a proxy battle ahead of this November’s elections, where there is already a proposal to codify abortion rights in the state constitution up for a vote. Anti-abortion groups have pushed Issue One as a way to kneecap that push for abortion protections out of the starting gate, while pro-abortion rights groups view the fight as a critical to preserving their pathway to victory this fall.
