Opposition Leader Peter Dutton says he has requested a meeting with the head of the Australian Federal Police for “further detail” about a briefing the AFP says it gave him in 2018, but which Mr Dutton does not recall.

Mr Dutton told 7.30 he would have “no problem” with any notes taken at the time by then-acting commissioner, Ramzi Jabbour, being made public, if they exist.

In response to questions on notice from a Senate committee, the AFP said it briefed Mr Dutton around July 2018 on an investigation into allegations of bribery concerning Mozammil Gulamabass “Mozu” Bhojani, who later pleaded guilty to bribing foreign officials.

Companies associated with Mr Bhojani had large contracts with the Home Affairs department to provide Australian offshore detention services on Nauru. Mr Dutton was Home Affairs minister at the time.

The AFP said Mr Jabbour had given a “verbal briefing” to Mr Dutton. But the agency does not hold a record of what information was briefed to the then minister.

Mr Dutton told 7.30 he had no recollection of the meeting and a search of his office’s records had found no trace of it. The Opposition leader said it was “inconsequential” if such a briefing did occur in 2018, because ministers are not involved in procurement. Questions about contracts should be answered by the department, Mr Dutton said.

He said he had requested a meeting with the current AFP commissioner for further details, but the request had to go through Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil’s office.

“She hasn’t cleared that meeting as yet,” Mr Dutton said.

“But I’m happy to have that discussion with the AFP to get more detail.”

A spokesperson for Minister Clare O’Neil said the question was one for Mark Dreyfus’ office, as Labor moved the AFP back under the Attorney-General’s department – rather than Home Affairs — last year when they came to office.
