Follow these ideas to colour your clothes on a budget . . .
BACK TO BLACK: Faded darker clothes can look tired, so use dye to make them seem as good as new.
A machine dye, such as Dylon, is simple to use. Just put it in the drum along with the item of clothing and select a standard wash.
You will need to do an empty wash afterwards to clean the machine.
Asda sells black Dylon Intense fabric dye for £6.60 — and there are many other colours available too.
Or if you have smaller, more delicate items, try a handwash dye, which you can use by soaking in a kitchen tub.
You can get a packet of Dylon handwash dye for £3.80 from Hobbycraft.
NATURAL DYES: Raid your kitchen cupboard for some natural and cheap dyes — this can also double up as a fun activity with children.
For example, turmeric will colour clothing a deep ochre or yellow. Fresh beetroot will make them red.
And red cabbage will turn them purple — or blue if you add baking powder too. Lemon will lighten any of the above colours.
Using these dyes is best suited to natural white or light-coloured material, such as cotton.
And it’s a good idea to experiment first with clothing or material that you’re not too precious about, such as an old tea towel.
To dye with turmeric, fill a saucepan with water and two to three tablespoons of the spice.
Simmer for around 20 minutes, then submerge your fabric in the pot.
Bring to the boil and simmer for around an hour. Make sure to thoroughly rinse afterwards and leave to dry.
Note that natural dyes are not completely colourfast and will fade and rinse out in time, so it’s best to wash dyed items with similarly coloured clothing.
