She told viewers that the hack killed all the bugs almost instantly.
Joanna Vasquez (@jojo11rsr) is a busy mother with children, so she doesn’t have time to deal with wasps.
Recently, a viral trick has been going around where a person holds a cup half-full of gasoline up to a wasp nest, so it’s fully sealed within the cup.
In a TikTok video, Joanne filmed a man doing this hack on her porch outside her house.
“Did the gasoline trend to take down the wasp nest,” the subtitle read.
After immediately placing the cup under the wasps, they started to drop dead into the liquid.
“Oh s**t,” the man said.
There was one wasp that tried hard to escape and flew near the top before succumbing to its fate.
The duo was in shock by how quickly the tip worked.
At the end of the video, they put the cup close to the camera to show the many floating wasps in the container.
It killed the wasps because gasoline is particularly dangerous to all living things.
“Hydrocarbons that comprise gasoline are volatile and can be lethal to humans if ingested or inhaled,” said Michael Raupp, Ph.D., an entomologist at the University of Maryland, in an email to VERIFY.
“I am certain that gasoline is quickly lethal once it enters their respiratory system. You wouldn’t last long if someone dumped you in a pool of gasoline.”
Texas A&M’s School Integrated Pest Management also says to never use gasoline to remove wasp nests.
If poured into the ground, gasoline can create a fire hazard, contaminate the soil and prevent the growth of vegetation for some time.
According to an expert from House Digest, if you have a severe allergy to wasps, it is best to leave this kind of task to a professional.
But, if you’re feeling brave, gather your supplies.
Many people offered their two cents in the comment section of the video.
“You telling me the whole time they had a weakness to gasoline?” one inquired.
“The one wasp that almost got out is the reason why I’d be too scared to try this,” a viewer commented.
“It’s crazy how many wasps come out of a small tiny nest,” another added.
