A man has been charged after allegedly threatening to kill a federal politician.

The 39-year-old man, who has no fixed address, was arrested by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) at the Brisbane International Airport on Tuesday.

The AFP alleges he sent threatening and harassing emails to an MP.

The man has been charged with several offences including one count of using a carriage service to make a threat to kill and five counts of using a carriage service to harass, threaten or menace.

The offences carry a maximum combined penalty of 15 years in prison.

The accused appeared in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Wednesday and was remanded in custody.

The matter is due to be heard in court again tomorrow.
