Britain’s Jamie Murray and New Zealander Michael Venus won on Tuesday to reach their first Grand Slam men’s doubles quarter-final as a team.

The 13th seeds secured a swift 6-4 6-3 win over Poland’s Jan Zielinski and Hugo Nys of Monaco.

Murray’s fellow Briton Neal Skupski and Dutch partner Wesley Koolhof smartly saw off defending champions Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson 6-3 7-6 (7-3).

If both pairs keep winning, they will face each other in the final.

Murray and Venus are in pursuit of a first Grand Slam title having teamed up at the start of the year.

Murray, 37, has won seven Grand Slam titles – two in men’s doubles alongside Bruno Soares and five in mixed – but this is the first time he has reached a quarter-final with Venus at any of the majors.

They suffered early exits at the Australian Open and French Open but are battling through the draw in south-west London and will face German pair Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz in the last eight on Wednesday.

“It was a good day for us. We played a solid match so happy to win and get a shot at the quarter-finals,” said Murray, after ending the hopes of Zielinski and Nys.

“We feel we’re due a big result. There’s no bigger place than here. Hopefully we can keep going.”My biggest goal in my career is to try to win the doubles at Wimbledon. We’re three matches away. I don’t know if it will happen or not.

“That’s the one I’ve always wanted to win ever since I’ve played tennis.”

Top seeds Skupski and Koolhof continued their pursuit of a first Grand Slam title together having beaten last year’s winners.

“We played very difficult opponents,” said Skupski. “It was a difficult match but we’re very happy to come through in straight sets and especially because we got it done just before the rain delay.”

The British-Dutch pair will face Uruguay’s Ariel Behar and Czech player Adam Pavlasek in the quarter-finals.

British mixed duo Jonny O’Mara and Olivia Nicholls secured a hard-fought 7-5 7-5 win over Australia’s Matthew Ebden and Ellen Perez to reach the semi-finals.

After both teams faced and saved break points early on, O’Mara and Nicholls remained calm to take the opening set before the pairs broke each other in the second.

However, the Britons stood firm and secured the victory with their third match point.

The wildcard duo have already beaten the fourth and fifth seeds en route to the last four where they will meet Croatian Mate Pavic and Ukrainian Lyudmyla Kichenok.

Naiktha Bains and Maia Lumsden, the first British duo to reach the women’s doubles quarter-finals since 1983, play on Wednesday. Belgium’s Elise Mertens and Australian Storm Hunter, the third seeds, stand in their way of further progress.
