Occasional Digest - a story for you

Malmö has been announced as the host city for the Eurovision Song Contest in 2024.

Back in May, Loreen made history when she conquered the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest with her hypnotic pop track Tattoo, becoming the first woman – and second person overall after Ireland’s Johnny Logan – to win twice.

Due to the Euphoria singer’s incredible accomplishment, Sweden was granted the hosting duties for next year’s festivities.

On 7 July, Eurovision officials finally announced that the semi-finals and grand final of the 68th song contest would be held in Malmö at the Malmö arena.

This will be Malmö’s third time hosting the long-running competition and Sweden’s seventh time.

“Malmö holds a special place in the history of the Contest, having successfully hosted it firstly in 1992 and then in 2013 – following Loreen’s last win,” Eurovision Song Contest Executive Supervisor Martin Österdahl said in a statement.

“We’re excited to be returning to this vibrant and dynamic city which has demonstrated it has the venues and infrastructure that are perfect for staging the world’s largest live music event.

“Malmö’s commitment to diversity, inclusivity, and innovation aligns perfectly with the spirit of the competition. Malmö’s bid demonstrated a huge passion for the Eurovision Song Contest, and I have full confidence in their ability to create an unforgettable experience that will bring together fans, artists, and viewers across the globe.”

Executive producer for SVT, Ebba Adielsson, echoed similar sentiments while also giving insight into why Malmö was chosen.

“When we finally had all the options, we did an overall assessment to consider all factors involved in organizing this huge event,” Ebba said.

“Malmö was eventually chosen as it met all the criteria and provides a location with great venues and is a city where all those attending the Eurovision Song Contest can move around easily.

“Malmö is also firmly committed to providing both those visiting and living in the city a chance to participate in the festivities.”

The Eurovision 2024 semi-finals are set to be held on 7 May and 9 May, with the grand final taking place on 11 May.
