Rwanda ruling is bizarre & a danger

PLENTY of hysteria has been whipped up by the Left over the Appeal Court blocking Britain deporting illegal migrants to Rwanda.

But crowing Labour MPs have failed to focus on what actually happened.

Lord Chief Justice Burnett said there was “no real risk” that Rwanda would wrongly return migrants to countries where they would face persecution as it had no agreements in place to do so.

But the other two judges ruled there was a risk, so they concluded Rwanda was not a “safe third country” .

It was on this narrow point alone that the court pressed the pause button on Rishi Sunak’s plan.

In today’s Sun on Sunday the Rwandan government sets out its case — denying it would ever return migrants to their home nations.

“We are a trusted partner of The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees,” the government says.

It stresses that the UNHCR, as well as other international organisations, “has recognised our exemplary treatment of refugees” and “not one” had been sent back to their home country.

Rwanda has even set up the world’s only Afghan girls’ boarding school.

So it is far from clear what facts the two Appeal Court judges relied on for their damning verdict.

The public has every right to be angry and confused by this bizarre legal wrangling which flies in the face of the will of Parliament.

Mr Sunak and Home Secretary Suella Braverman are absolutely right to appeal this judgement, which should be heard by the Supreme Court as soon as possible.

Every day this plan remains thwarted is a day the evil people smugglers continue profiting from their deadly trade.

And as the weather improves the number of migrants willing to risk the perilous Channel crossing is certain to swell.

With lives in danger, there is not a moment to lose.

On the right road

FOR millions of Brits, a car is an essential part of life.

But motorists are being hammered at every turn, from sky-high petrol prices to eco-loons blocking the roads.

So it is good news that the competitions watchdog looks set to create a new PumpWatch website.

This will finally allow drivers to compare petrol prices in their area — and avoid rip-off forecourts.

It is a huge victory for our Keep It Down campaign and will help put real money back into peoples’ pockets.

It is exactly what ministers should be focusing on — rather than bonkers Net Zero policies that will just push prices up.
