Occasional Digest - a story for you

A SHOT PUTTER has “taken one for the team” as she took part in her nation’s 100m hurdling event.

Jolien Maliga Boumkwo usually competes in the shot put and hammer throwing events but had to put her tools down and be a hero for Belgium at the European Games.

Boumkwo, 29, is the captain of the Belgian team and has won twelve national titles in her career.

But she has received much more attention for standing in for injured team-mates Anne Zagr and Hanne Claes at the European Games in Poland.

She ran the event and finished last but did manage to claim two points because Mujinga Kambundji of Switzerland had a false start.

Boumkow did the best she could as she jumped the hurdles and completed the event in 32.81 with a smile across her face.

And fans loved the spirit in which Boumkow took part in the event as they flocked to social media to comment on it.

One wrote: “And actually managed to get 2 points for Belgium, because of Kambundji’s false start. Props to her for taking one for the team.”

A second commented: “This is awesome! Another reason why track is such a great team sport, as well as great individual sport, too!”

A third wrote: “Well done Jolien. 👏 Job done. 👍.”

While a fifth declared: “Definition of TEAM PLAYER.”

Another added: “Moment of the Champs: Belgian shot putter Jolien Maliga Boumkwo running the 100m hurdles, finishing in 32.81 🇧🇪.

“And she even brought TWO points for Belgium… a QUEEN if you ask me! 👑

After completing the race, the leaderboard displayed that it was Boumkwo’s “season’s best” in the event.
