Vivienne Abena, who shares elegance tips on her YouTube account @WomanOfElegance, explained why the trends are so bad.
“Spending money and investing time on your looks does now guarantee that you’ll exude elegance at the end of the say,” she said.
According to the pro, not looking cheap isn’t always about how much money you spend on items, but also the message it sends others.
Too many logos
It doesn’t matter if it’s the most expensive designer logo or your favourite sports brand – too many logos is always going to make you look cheap.
“All of those logos on one outfit? That’s a huge fashion disaster,” Vivienne slammed.
Graphic T shirts
“Tops, dresses and trousers with graphics will make you look like a 13-year-old, and not in a good way,” the fashion whizz said.
Instead, you should go for plain and simple T shirts for a more timeless and elegant look, she suggested.
Too many bright colours
Although it can be fun to add splashes of colour to your outfit, having too many clashing shades “is a short cut to a style disaster,” according to the pro.
It’s importnat to stick to complimentary colours and limit yourself to one or two different shades per outfit if you don’t want to look cheap, she noted.
Heavy makeup
Makeup should enhance your natural look, Vivienne said.
The key to a classy beauty look is sticking to the ‘less is more’ rule, and go for a subtle, nude look.
You should also practice applying your makeup so it’s never cakey or wonky.
Dirty accesories
You could be wearing the most stylish and elegant outfit, but if you pair it with a tattered bag or scuffed shoes it doesn’t matter.
Keeping your accessories in good condition will help elevate your look.
“It’s better to go without a handbag than carrying one that is peeled badly, as these just have a way of making you look scruffy,” Vivienne said.
Creased clothes
“Creases and wrinkles can make the most expensive of clothes look like a rag,” the fashion whizz said.
Not only that, but a cheap but crease-free top will always look better than an expensive top covered in wrinkles.
“If you wear wrinkled clothing everyone will notice you but for the wrong reasons – they’ll notice you look like something the cat dragged in,” she added.
Oversized and undersized clothing
Weather it’s crop tops and micro skirts or baggy jeans and T shirts – if your clothes are too big or too small you will automatically look cheap, the pro explained.
You can always add a belt to cinch in the waist of dresses that are slightly too big, she notes.
But as for undersized clothes – it might be time to wave goodbye to them for good.
Long nails
It’s bad news if you love long nails – whether they’re fake or natural, they’re always a big no-no as far as Vivienne is concerned.
Not only do they look cheap, but they’re probably way more grotty than you think, she said.
“Your nails should look like that of a human being and not grizzly bear.
“Anything longer than one inch and your nails will start to look like claws.”
Too much jewellery
Wearing too many rings, bracelets or necklaces can instantly cheapen your look.
All that bling will grab people’s attention but for the wrong reasons, the elegance expert revealed.
Stick to a simple pair of stud earrings and one necklace, or dangly earrings for the evening.
Visible underwear
If your bra straps peep through your top or if you have a visible panty line your outfit automatically looks cheap, Vivienne explained.
This is often because you’re wearing the wrong size underwear, or not wearing the right style of underwear for your outfit.
