Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, author Ian McEwan and immunologist and geneticist Sir John Bell have been appointed Companions of Honour as part of King Charles’s birthday honours list.

Wintour, who has been editor of Vogue US since 1988, is a philanthropist and one of the most powerful people in the fashion world.

She has raised more than $US300 million ($436 million) for the US Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute.

Anna Wintour is being recognised for her philanthropy and contribution to fashion. 

McEwan was appointed to the order for his services to literature. 

He is the author of acclaimed novels including Amsterdam, Atonement and Enduring Love.

Sir John has been on a 30-year mission to build vaccine research capability at the University of Oxford where he is regius professor of medicine.

The British government said his work was vital to the development of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine. 

The Order of the Campions of Honour is limited to 65 people at any time. 

Ian McEwan is being honoured for his services to literature. 

More than 1,000 people were also rewarded as part of the King’s birthday honours for their service to education, health care, philanthropy and other areas.

King Charles III, who was crowned in May, will celebrate his official birthday on Saturday with the Trooping of the Colour military parade.

The 74-year-old monarch’s real birthday is on November 14.
