Dara Huang (@dara_huang) is a London-based architect and interior designer who started her own firm, Design Haus Liberty, to help those hoping to elevate their homes.
On TikTok, she offers insight into her design philosophy through informative videos that include do’s and don’ts for wannabe decorators.
In one clip, she stood in her polished living room as she revealed three things she would never do as an interior designer.
COLOR
The first question she addressed was how to elegantly bring color into a space.
“When you’re adding color, make it an accent on a few pieces,” she said, pointing to a red club chair and a pale pink chaise.
Her warning? “Don’t put [color] in the rug or all over the place.”
Instead, Dara opted to layer a grey rug above a beige one.
SHELVES
Dara’s living room’s aesthetic appeal can be primarily attributed to the wall-to-wall built-in bookshelves, layered with frames, vases, and, of course, books.
She said they look so pleasing because she avoids a common mistake.
“When styling the shelf, instead of having the books all wonky and sideways, make sure that they are straight and facing you.”
LIGHTING
Her third tip regarded how to keep your space lit.
“When it comes to lighting and making a cozy lounge space, make sure that you add plenty of ambient light.”
Rather than prioritize overhead lighting, she said to go for side lamps and table lamps.
“And voila! That’s it.”
