Former English rugby league stars Kevin Sinfield and Rob Burrow have been applauded for a heartwarming moment at the finish line of the Leeds Marathon.

Burrow retired in 2017 and was diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND) two years later, receiving an MBE for raising money and awareness of the condition in the years since.

Sinfield was also recognised alongside former England and Leeds Rhinos teammate Burrow at last year’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards for his efforts.

Sinfield said the team’s fundraising efforts around the inaugural Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon had raised more than 3 million pounds ($5.6 million) for a variety of charities.

Sinfield and other Leeds Rhinos pushed Burrow in a wheelchair for most of the marathon, with Sinfield lifting him out of the chair and carrying him across the line.

The hulking forward planted a kiss on the cheek of his former halfback as they finished to applause and cheers.

“The support on the streets has been amazing,” Sinfield told the crowd after the run.

“Roll on 2024.”
