May 1 (UPI) — The 2-year-old daughter of Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Shaquil Barrett has drowned in the pool of their Florida family home, authorities said.
Officers arrived at the home Sunday morning in response to a call that came in before 9:30 a.m. about a child who fell into a pool, the Tampa Police Department said in a statement to ESPN.
The child, identified as Arrayah Barrett, was then transported to an area hospital where she was pronounced dead, according to authorities.
“It is not believed to be suspicious in nature at this time, but a purely accidental and tragic incident,” the police department said, adding an investigation was ongoing.
Arrayah Barrett was the youngest of four children to Shaquil and Jordanna Barrett, who married in February of 2012.
“Today’s tragic news is heartbreaking for all members of the Buccaneers family,” the Tampa Bay Buccaneers said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Shaq, Jordanna and the entire Barrett family during this unimaginably difficult time.
“While no words can provide true comfort at a time such as this, we offer our support and love as they begin to process this very profound loss of their beloved Arrayah.”
Shaquil Barrett, 30, is a two-time Pro Bowler who entered the NFL undrafted in 2015 with the Denver Broncos. He has played for the Buccaneers since 2019.
