American Talor Gooch has streaked to a 10-shot lead and complete command of the inaugural LIV Golf tournament in Australia.
Key points:
- Gooch is 10 strokes clear of a group of six players
- Cam Smith is the leading Australian on 9-under
- The British Open champion shot a 6-under 66 in the second round
Gooch carded another 10-under-par 62 in Saturday’s second round at Adelaide’s Grange Golf Club to reach 20-under.
The 31-year-old is 10 strokes clear of six players: Americans Pat Perez, Brooks Koepka and Cameron Tringale, South African pair Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwarzel and Mexico’s Abraham Ancer.
Australia’s Cam Smith and American Phil Mickelson are among a group of five golfers tied eighth at 9-under, with Dustin Johnson a further shot back.
Smith carded a 6-under 66 on Saturday but compatriots Marc Leishman (4-under), Matt Jones (2-over) and Jed Morgan (3-over) battled to make inroads.
For Gooch, the tournament and the $5.97 million winner’s cheque are his to lose.
After firing 62 in the opening round, he again tamed the sandbelt course, producing an eagle and eight birdies.
“Everything is just going my way,” Gooch said.
“I’m hitting the ball where I want it to go, a couple of times when I missed a shot I ended up in a decent spot.”
