Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne beat the trio to first place with the Belgian one of only two current players to make the top ten.
De Bruyne, 31, has spent eight years in the Prem with City and became the fastest player to record 100 assists in the competition against Southampton on Saturday.
He has four winners’ medals to boast of and 62 goals in 237 games – less than Gerrard, Lampard and Scholes.
But in a poll conducted by football data outlet VisualGame, he narrowly edged out Gerrard to be picked as the best Premier League midfielder ever out of a pool of 35 players.
The rest of the top five had considerably less votes than the top two, with Lampard rounding off the podium places.
11-time winner Scholes is next, just about pipping Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira to fifth place.
Fans are shocked the Manchester United icon is so slow, with many suggesting should have top spot.
Others believe Gerrard or Lampard are more deserving of top spot as the age-old argument rumbles on.
One fan said: “Paul Scholes only 4th!!! Gerrard 2nd KDB 1st????? The PR is insane.”

Another added: “Paul Scholes disrespect just because everyone hates United just so shameless. He won 11 league titles 🤣”
A third wrote: “Steven Gerrard is the most complete midfielder to ever play the game.”
And another remarked: “Lampard is easily no.1. He could do everything. Like a more technically gifted and even smarter Gerrard.
“Casual fans that started watching in 2014 just look at the stats and think he was getting scoring stats like Bruno Feranandez.”
