Firefighters have raced to douse a blaze that engulfed a factory in Melbourne’s south-east on Easter Sunday.
Key points:
- Dozens of firefighters have brought a blaze in Melbourne’s south-east under control
- The cause of the fire has not yet been established
- Authorities have advised local residents to be cautious about smoke from the fire
Emergency services were called to a factory workshop on South Road in Moorabbin shortly after 7am on Sunday.
Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) said the fire had taken hold in the a single storey caravan workshop, breaching through the roof space.
More than 60 firefighters attacked the fire, which was brought under control about 8:55am.
FRV Assistant Chief Fire Officer Paul Foster said crews would need to remain on site to keep the fire contained.
“The building is very, very structurally unstable so firefighters can’t enter into the building,” Mr Foster said.
“Crews will be remaining here all day and more than likely all night to make sure the fire is properly contained.”
A community watch and act notification to stay indoors has been issued due to low, thick smoke travelling in a northerly direction.
“There have been a number of residents who came out from eating their Easter eggs to watch the fire from close by,” Mr Foster said.
“Residents are advised to keep their doors and windows closed and remain inside.”
Specialist investigators will be attending to determine the cause of the fire which they said is currently unknown.
