Occasional Digest - a story for you

Kaun Yin, also known as Guan Yin, is the bodhisattva of infinite compassion that can be found in East Asian Buddhism. Her name translates to “Observing the Sounds of the World” and describes her ability to listen to pleas from people so that she can help the needy. Every year, her birthday is celebrated with three annual birthdays, but it’s only the second one that concerns us right now.

This is Kuan Yin’s Birthday that’s celebrated in Taiwan on the 19th day of the 6th lunar month. This auspicious event marks her initiation into Enlightenment. The placement of her birthday on the lunar calendar means that on the Gregorian calendar it can fall anywhere from the beginning of April to the end of March—depending upon the year.

Kuan Yin was originally worshiped as the male bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara In India and was the personification of kindness and compassion prior to the Song Dynasty in China. Originally, the deity was given the attributes of both genders but became increasingly associated with mother-goddesses in China over the years. By the 12th century, she was interpreted as a female form—depicted as a white-robed woman.

Let’s go over a few interesting facts about Taiwan before continuing on. Sound like a plan? Good, below are some of the facts that we’ve uncovered about Taiwan.

  • The number 4 is considered unlucky in Taiwan.
  • The highest mountain in Taiwan is Yu-Shan.
  • It’s traditional for astrologers to determine whether a match between couples is an auspicious one.

In Taiwan, this holiday is observed mainly in Buddhist temples. Temples consider this a major observance, as as such they’ll hold special services that include lighting candles and incense, making offerings, and chanting.
