Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell is being treated for a concussion after falling at a hotel in Washington late Wednesday.
The longtime Kentucky lawmaker tripped at a dinner event and was admitted to a hospital, spokesman David Popp told USA TODAY on Thursday.
“He is expected to remain in the hospital for a few days of observation and treatment,” Popp said.
“The leader is grateful to the medical professionals for their care and to his colleagues for their warm wishes.”
In 2019, the Kentucky Republican, 81, who served as majority leader from 2015 to 2021, tripped and fell at his home in Kentucky, suffering a shoulder fracture.

Bipartisan well wishes
Senate Majority Chuck Schumer, who is McConnell’s Democratic counterpart, said he spoke with the GOP leader briefly Thursday morning.
“I join every single one of my colleagues in wishing Leader McConnell a speedy and full recovery,” Schumer said on the Senate floor Thursday.
“We wish him well and want him to come back soon, so additional information that confirms that he’ll be coming back soon and he’s doing better would be welcome,” said Republican Sen. John Cornyn of Texas.
Other lawmakers expressed hopes for a swift recovery as well, such as Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, who said she was “praying for my friend” in a tweet Thursday.
Democratic Sen. Ben Ray Luján, of New Mexico, said McConnell “was one of the first people to reach out to me after my stroke.”
“I’m wishing him a full and speedy recovery,” he said.
