Concerned locals gathered and lit candles at the event which was attended by the Bishop of Lewes, Will Hazlewood.

It has not yet been established if the remains that have been discovered are those of Marten’s child.

Police arrested aristocrat Marten, 35, and Gordon, 48, in Brighton on suspicion of child neglect and gross negligence manslaughter and they have now been charged.

It’s believed the child’s remains were found in woodland next to an allotment just a few minutes from where the pair were detained.

Officers were today manning the wooded area after the grim find yesterday afternoon – just yards from a row of houses in the Hollingdean area of Brighton, East Sussex.

It is close to a public footpath and green screens have been erected next to Lower Roedale allotments – a five-minute walk from where Marten and her lover Gordon were arrested on Monday.

No further details were revealed about the baby – including its sex – and a post-mortem examination is to take place in due course.

Following the couple’s arrest, police launched a massive search across 91-square miles of East Sussex for the missing baby.

Over 200 officers were spotted searching under cars and behind bins in Stanmer Villas and nearby Roedale Valley Allotments.

On Tuesday morning DSI Lewis Basford from the Met police said they were “hopeful” that the child was still alive.

However Police later admitted there was a “possibility the baby has come to harm” during the couple’s seven weeks on the run.

Marten and Gordon were reported missing after their car broke down near Bolton, Greater Manchester, on January 5.

Cops previously said the new mum had given birth in her car days before the pair fled.

The pair ditched their burning car and a nationwide hunt for the three of them began.

They are believed to have spent time sleeping rough and travelling the country using cabs after being spotted buying camping equipment from an East London Argos on January 7.

Before they were found, the pair were last seen with their baby in Newhaven, East Sussex, on January 9.
