The presidential election result from Gubio local government area, one of the restive areas in the northern part of Borno State, Northeast Nigeria, has been rejected on the grounds of irregularities.
Aminah Gaji, the Gubio LGA collation officer, presented the results earlier today in Maiduguri, the capital city. However, it was rejected because of discrepancies between the total registered voters and accredited voters.
Ijasini Ijani, a 2023 HumAngle Accountability Fellow following the update at the centre closely, said, “There is data mismatched in the result presented by the collation officer of Gubio Local Government Area. The number of voters is above the number of accredited votes.”
In an interview with an observer, Abubakar Sadiq Muazu, he said, “We have seen results presented from Mafa, Magumeri, Kaga, and Gubio LGAs. But one of the issues we had today is with Gubio LGA where their collation officer presented the presidential election result with a total number of accredited voters that is far, far less than the people that cast their votes.”
According to Abubakar, the discrepancy calls for alarm.
The Gubio voting exercise was carried out at the volatile local government headquarters on Saturday, Feb. 25. The Internally Displaced Persons living across host communities and IDP camps in the city had to travel to the headquarters to cast their votes.
Our reporter learnt that most of them have started returning to their temporary shelters in the city after the presidential election was concluded at their local government.
Many of these IDPs have been living in difficult conditions characterised by hunger and lack of money and what is the implication of this rejection to the efforts invested by the displaced people of Gubio.
They travelled roughly about 80 kilometres to cast their votes.
