Occasional Digest - a story for you

SINCE 1948, the Met Gala has paid homage to fashion with outrageous costumes and evening wear adorning only the most A list of celebrities.

Only the world’s best achievers in music, film, Broadway, fashion and other worthy personalities are invited to the annual grand Met Gala, organized and overseen by Anna Wintour.

Who is banned from the Met Gala?

Following 2020, when the Met Gala was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, it made its grand return in September 2021, ahead of its annual May date.

For September 2021 and May 2022, the Met Gala was a two-part exhibition in two areas of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Part one, In America: A Lexicon of Fashion, opened in the Anna Wintour Costume Center on September 18, 2021.

In America: An Anthology of Fashion opened on May 5, 2022, in the period rooms of the American Wing.

The world eagerly awaits learning what each year’s theme will be and what the celebrity guests will wear on the red carpet.

However, while Anna Wintour’s list of who is and who isn’t a big enough deal to invite changes yearly, there are some celebrities that you’ll probably not be seeing at a Met Gala in the future.

Tim Gunn

Author and television personality Tim Gunn enjoyed attending Met Galas until 2006 when his invitation got rescinded indefinitely.

Gunn was banned after he publicly joked about when he saw Anna Wintour getting carried down the stairs at a fashion show by two sizable bodyguards.

“I was asked what is the most unforgettable thing I’ve ever seen in fashion, And I said it’s easy; it was watching Anna Wintour being carried down five flights of stairs by two bodyguards from a fashion show,” he told E!‘s Fashion Police.

After disclosing his most “unforgettable” fashion memory to Page Six, Vogue asked him to retract his statement, but he refused, leading him to be shunned from the Met Gala.

Rachel Zoe

Celebrity stylist and fashion designer Rachel Zoe was once invited to Brian Atwood’s table at the 2007 Gala – but was disinvited shortly thereafter.

Zoe hasn’t been invited to the Met Gala since she said she was more influential than Wintour.

During an interview with the New York Times, she said: “Anna Wintour is one of my heroes, but they say I’m more influential.”

Being the editor of Vogue, Wintour didn’t take Zoe’s comments kindly and removed her from the guest list moving forward.

However, Zoe shows that there is hope for (almost) anyone.

Her statements were made in 2007, and she returned to the event in 2012, Cosmopolitan reports.

Zayn Malik

While Gigi Hadid’s baby daddy may have attended as her plus-one once upon a time, he won’t attend again anytime soon.

At least, that’s what he told GQ in 2018.

While Zayn may still get an invitation for the big night, he told the outlet he wouldn’t go.

He said: “I’d rather be sitting at my house doing something productive than dressing up in really expensive clothes and being photographed on a red carpet… to do the self-indulgent ‘Look at me, I’m amazing’ thing on the red carpet, it’s not me.”

Tina Fey

Tina Fey is one of those women who doesn’t need anyone else’s approval to keep doing her thing.

This is never more obvious than when she decided to call the Met Gala a ‘jerk parade’ on The Late Show with David Letterman.

She said: “You go and it’s this beautiful space and it’s just every jerk from every walk of life is there wearing, like, some stupid thing.”

So we’ll be surprised if she decides to go again after that interview (or if she’s even invited back).

Donald Trump

Trump always attended the event and even proposed to his wife, Melania, at the Met Gala in 2004.

According to Newsweek, “Trump proposed with a 13-karat diamond ring worth almost $3million – but he quickly informed people he got the ring for half-price.”
