EAST LANSING, Mich. — Multiple people were injured in a shooting at the Michigan State University campus Monday night that prompted a shelter-in-place order, authorities said.
Michigan State University police said a lone shooting suspect is “believed to be on foot.” With the suspect believed to be on the loose on campus, authorities said students and staff should continue to shelter in place.
The university’s police department alerted the shooting shortly after 8:30 p.m. Police then reported a second shooting on campus about 50 minutes later.
“Shots have been fired on the MSU campus. The shooter is still at large. Police are active on the scene. Community members on and off campus should shelter in place immediately,” the city of East Lansing said on Twitter.
Dozens of officers were seen patrolling the scene with more than 11 ambulances.
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said Monday that she was briefed on the shooting.
“The Michigan State Police along with @msupolice, local law enforcement and first responders are on the ground,” Whitmer said on Twitter. “Let’s wrap our arms around the Spartan Community tonight. We will keep everyone updated as we learn more.”
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives Detroit division also said it was responding “to an active shooter” at the school
The East Lansing High School auditorium, where a school board meeting was being held Monday night, was locked down and people were for a time being prevented by school officials from leaving.
