Patrick Mahomes’ right ankle was looking good until it wasn’t.
Mahomes, the Kansas City Chiefs’ star quarterback, appeared to re-injure his right ankle during the second quarter of Super Bowl 57 against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Mahomes was tackled by Eagles linebacker T.J. Edwards with 1:44 left in the second quarter, and his right foot took the brunt of the fall. Mahomes suffered a high-ankle sprain on the right side last month.
After the tackle, Mahomes gingerly limped toward the sideline. He was shown on camera agonizing in pain while his ankle was being evaluated by trainers. He then returned to the game to close out the first half and started the second half for the Eagles.
Before halftimeMahomes jogged back to the locker room with his teammates. He did not run with a significant limp like he did when he first walked to the sideline. Throughout the playoffs, Mahomes has tried his best to jog without showing pain.

Which ankle did Mahomes hurt?
Mahomes first injured his right ankle during the first quarter of a playoff game against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Jan. 21. He also returned to that game in the second half to help the Chiefs win 27-20.
Mahomes’ ankle was a key focal point before the AFC championship game, but he played while injured and made a pivotal 5-yard run that saw him tackled after crossing the sidelines for a penalty. The play helped the Chiefs reach the Super Bowl, beating the Cincinnati Bengals 23-20 Jan. 29.
The Chiefs backup quarterback, Chad Henne, is a 37-year-old veteran who has played in just two playoff games during his 13-year career.
Henne was seen warming up on the sidelines after Mahomes limped to the sideline during the second quarter.
When Mahomes first injured his ankle against the Jaguars, Henne entered the game in the second quarter and threw his first career playoff touchdown.
