More than 80 firefighters battled a blaze in a temple in Melbourne’s south east on Sunday night.

Fire Rescue Victoria confirmed that firefighters were battling the blaze at the Bright Moon Buddhist Temple in Springvale at around 8pm on Sunday.

“Crews were called to the place of worship in Springvale Road about 8pm and arrived to find a large multi storey building ablaze,” Fire Rescue Victoria said in a statement.

“There is a large contingent of emergency services in the area and Springvale Road, Springvale South, is closed.”

Local resident Cody Cardoso saw the smoke billowing into the sky from his home in Springvale South.

“The whole street was just covered with all emergency services,” he said.

“When I saw the temple it was just completely engulfed in flames, basically an inferno.”

Mr Cardoso said the fire was devastating to the community.

“It’s just sad to see, people’s ashes were in there and that temple meant a lot to people in the community.”

Videos on social media showed scenes of the Bright Moon temple alight, with smoke billowing into the sky, that some said could be seen in neighbouring suburbs.

Crews confirmed the blaze came under control at 10:35pm.
