Sunderland captain Corry Evans has been ruled out for the rest of the season after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury in the win over Middlesbrough.

The midfielder has made 57 league appearances since joining the Black Cats from Blackburn in July 2021.

“It did seem innocuous,” manager Tony Mowbray told BBC Radio Newcastle.

“Sometimes they turn out to be the worst injuries. I’ve known Corry a long time now and he understands what’s in front of him and the gravity of it.

“He’s got a tough period coming trying to do the work that’s required to strengthen every part of his body again.

“My feelings are with Corry and he’s a huge loss to our football team because of the balance he brings.”

The Northern Ireland international is out of contract at the end of the campaign.

Meanwhile, Sunderland forward Leon Dajaku has joined Swiss side St Gallen on loan until the end of the season.

The 21-year-old German scored four goals in 27 appearances last season but has made just two starts in 2022-23.
