Occasional Digest - a story for you

As I alluded to earlier, Greek star Maria Sakkari was less than impressed with her opponent Diana Shnaider during their match.

The teenage Russian qualifier drove Sakkari up the wall with her power game throughout, but also her vocals.

In a match that featured both players letting rip with a few screams, Sakkari took exception during the second set as Shnaider pumped her fist on consecutive points.

After initially smiling, Sakkari told the chair umpire:

“If she screams one more time to my face… she is coming towards me.

“One more time, I am going to speak to the referee.”

That did not eventuate.

But in her press conference Sakkari was asked to elaborate on the issue and did.

“During a match you can be very pumped or, you know, the way that some players celebrate their points, it’s not appropriate,” she said of Shnaider’s actions.

“I wasn’t happy with that.

“But, you know, she never did it again, that was very nice of her, so it was, yeah, that was it.”

Sakkari also paid tribute to her opponent’s game, specifically her power, which the Greek star said stung her into action.

“In the tight moments and in the moments where I had to, I just raised my level by being more, you know, aggressive,” She said.

“I felt like the girl was hitting the ball very, very hard, so like, by pushing the ball I had no chance.

“The power she has in her forehand and on her serve was … I haven’t seen that in a while from a young player.”

Sakkari will next face Swiss Jill Teichmann or China’s Lin Zhu.
