And Beth certainly needs to with two young children to look after and a house renovation underway.

” I think January is the perfect time to reset in many areas in our lives and finances are one of those.”

Save your pennies

It’s becoming increasingly rare to carry cash around these days – and most people’s piggy banks are sitting collecting dust.

But that doesn’t mean you have to stop saving your pennies.

Everyone has access to online banking these days, and Monzo has become a real lifesaver for many thanks to their savvy saving options.

Not only can you separate your money into pots so you can ‘cash-stuff’ virtually, but the bank provider also offers an automatic savings option.

Each time you make a transaction on your card, Monzo will round it up and put the extra change in a savings pot automatically for you.

Beth says:

“I use the roundup savings option on Monzo.

“It rounds all your transactions up to the nearest £1 and transfers the additional money into a savings account.

“I’ve saved over £400 last year doing this & you barely notice a few pence here and there leaving your account.”

Check what’s going out

Too often we end up forgetting what direct debits are coming out of our accounts.

Netflix, Disney Plus, Amazon Prime are all great but do you really need all of them?

Beth says:

“Go through your direct debits and cancel any that you’re not getting good use out of – Netflix, gym memberships, national trust etc.

“I managed to save £20 a month by pruning these payments.”

A simple task that took Beth seconds to do saved her a total of £240 in just a single year.

Watch your water

Water and electric bills can quickly creep up on you.

And nobody wants to be faced with huge bills months down the line, especially during the cost of living crisis.

Beth says:

“Turning washing down to 20 degrees. This can help save a fortune on your energy bills.”

In fact, Which revealed if you do an average of four washes a week turning the temperature down to 20 degrees will save you £29 a year instead of £77.

“Cut shower time down from 10 minutes, to 5 minutes. Severn Trent advises this could save up to £700 a year.

“You can order a free timer from their website.”

Bonus tip: Be food conscious

And no, we don’t mean go on a diet as many people do in January.

We often tend to pick up the occasional extra snack when browsing the aisles of our local supermarket.

And if you work, it can be all too tempting to pick up lunch and a coffee – a hefty expense when you total it up.

But you can stop spending extra on food by making a few quick simple changes such as doing your food shop online or taking a few minutes in the evening to pack your lunch.

Beth says:

“Start doing your food shopping online.

“It’s much easier to stick to your budget and prevents you from getting enticed into additional spending when browsing a supermarket. You can even do click-and-collect at Aldi now.

“Commit to taking a packed lunch and flask of coffee to work every day.

” Spending just £5 a day on lunch and coffee, 5 days a week over the course of the year accumulates to £1,300.”

Beth’s total savings

Automatic savings – £400

Direct Debits – £240

Water – 748

Food – £1,300

Total savings – £2,688
