But working in a supermarket can often give some of the best, because you’ll save on things you will actually use.

A Tesco worker has shared insight into just how good their discount is in practice.

TikTok user Russell M has revealed he recently managed to get £57 worth of shopping for less just over £1.

The 16 items, which included a bunch of leftover Christmas goodies, meat and sweet treats, cost him just £1.29.

He shared the extent of the discount in his latest upload.

Items he managed to pick up included a Yule log, king prawns, vanilla cake and rump steak.

He also got his hands on tubs of fruit, Christmas party food and more at a fraction of the cost it costs customers.

A large amount of food and drink is reduced at the end of the day in Tesco stores, which helped to cut down the price.

Employees of the supermarket get a Colleague Clubcard when they join the store.

This gives them 15% off after every pay day for a four-day period and 10% the rest of the month on most Tesco purchases.

However, Tesco worker Russell doesn’t care if people are bitter at the savings.

Many of those in the comments agreed with the sentiment and felt he deserved to take full advantage of the savings.

One person wrote on the TikTok from December: ‘People are so bitter 😂 They deserve it especially this time of year!’

‘After visiting a very busy Tesco yesterday, staff 100% deserve cheap or free food. Not like there’s no reductions left for customers,’ another wrote.

A fellow supermarket worker added: ‘Me coming home from my shifts at Asda with like £70 worth of things down to 10p hahahaah.’

Russell explained it was part of something called a Colleague Shop.

This was introduced by Tesco in 2018 to give colleagues the opportunity to take food approaching its expiry date, as part of its wider work to prevent good food from going to waste.

It was recently reported that staff missed out on their Christmas bonus in 2022 and were instead handed £5 tubs of Quality Street.

According to The Guardian, Tesco said it had doubled the staff discount to 20% on certain days during the run-up to Christmas.

This was said to be offered in place of giving out vouchers or a cash bonus.
