STARKVILLE, Miss. — In the days following his death, the reach Mississippi State football’s Mike Leach had is evident. From actor Matthew McConaughey to players such as former NFL receiver Michael Crabtree, social media has featured an outpouring of love for Leach.

Wednesday, Leach’s supporters were reminded the coach’s presence extended to the White House. Former President Donald Trump, who Leach endorsed ahead of the 2016 election, released a statement mourning the loss of a friend.

“Mike Leach was an incredible Patriot and Coach, with a big heart for our Country and for Football,” Trump said. “From the very beginning, Mike was on Team MAGA, because he believed in our Great American Dream, something he lived, and helped others to achieve for themselves. My deepest condolences to his wife Sharon, and family. Coach Mike Leach will be missed by us all.”

Leach spoke during Trump’s campaign trail in 2016. He shared his admiration for Trump, saying the soon-to-be president never lacked confidence. Leach was impressed with Trump’s office and the buildings he owned.

As Sports Illustrated’s Ross Dellenger reported, Leach once stepped aside during a Mississippi State practice in 2020 to field a call from Trump.

Trump did his share of endorsing Leach as well. Soon after Leach was fired from Texas Tech in 2009 following allegations of abuse toward a player, the head coaching job at Miami opened.

Leach told The Associated Press it would be fun to coach at Miami. Trump was in his corner, sending a letter telling university president Donna Shalala to replace Randy Shannon with Leach.
