Occasional Digest - a story for you

NASA has released new photos from its James Webb telescope — this time showing Saturn’s largest moon, Titan.

NASA posted on their blog that they’d been waiting “for years” to study Titan.

“Its atmosphere is filled with thick haze that obscures visible light reflecting off the surface,” they wrote.

“Titan’s atmosphere is incredibly interesting, not only due to its methane clouds and storms, but also because of what it can tell us about Titan’s past and future – including whether it always had an atmosphere.”

They’re still analysing the data and the photos, so we might see more details released in the next few weeks.

They also gave us a — quite wholesome — insight into how scientists react to getting these kind of photos.

The first team member to see the new pics, Sebastien Rodriguez from the Universite Paris Cité send an excited email in the early hours.

“What a wake-up this morning (Paris time)! Lots of alerts in my mailbox! I went directly to my computer and started at once to download the data. At first glance, it is simply extraordinary! I think we’re seeing a cloud!”
