HALF-TIME: Australia on top, leading Samoa 14-0

The Kangaroos will be happy with the three tries and none conceded, but their attack still looks sloppy and I think a lot of that can be put down to Samoa’s defence. They’re reading a lot of the Kangaroos’ stuff and shutting it down, and scrambling well to keep them out too.

Still 14-0 is nothing to sneeze at and Samoa needs to score first in the second half if they’re to have a chance here.

Samoa’s defence is weathering everything the Kangaroos throw at them, although honestly, it’s pretty disjointed attack.

The Kangaroos aim up in defence and force Ligi Sao back into the in-goal, but we won’t have any more play, as Samoa lets the dropout clock run out.

38th minute

The Kangaroos hand it over on the last without any harm, but Samoa will have to work it out off their tryline again.

Oh no! Brian To’o loses it as he tries to get up to play the ball. So Australia has a prime opportunity with two minutes left.

The Kangaroos get over halfway on the 1st tackle after Milford’s reefed kick was powered back by Josh Addo-Carr.

Nathan Cleary’s poor goal-kicking is keeping this scoreline close, but 14-0 I’m sure still feels like a mountain for Samoa.

Oh sensational tackle from James Tedesco in cover, after Taylan May went down the left and passed back in-field to a flying Jarome Luai, who was brought down by the Aussie skipper.

Liam Martin gets the try

The video referee says Liam Martin maintained possession and flashes a green light.

Harry Grant went short side and held up the pass for Martin, who muscled his way over.

I thought Jack Wighton might have interfered with Taylan May coming in to make the tackle, but the officials disagree.

Harry Grant is out there too, so Mal Meninga working his subs.

Liam Martin is over, but Ashley Klein says no try. I think he thinks there was a bobble, but there could also be an obstruction.

28th minute: Josh Addo-Carr saves the Kangaroos

The bomb went up and Joseph Suaali’i took a remarkable leaping catch, then offloaded to Stephen Crichton, but Addo-Carr just saved it, batting down the pass that would’ve sent Brian To’o over in the corner.

Oh but it falls apart as Anthony Milford knocks on the pass from Luai with the Kangaroos defence coming for him.

27th minute

Pat Carrigan and Cameron Murray come onto the park as Australia tries to truck it out of their half.

Munster kicks early to clear space, but it just dribbles into the corner post. So Samoa get a seven-tackle set from their 20m line.

How are the hands on Latrell Mitchell catching in one hand, on the run, by his knees and almost sends Josh Addo-Carr over for a try out wide.

And Joseph Suaali’i saves a Mitchell try through the middle, kneeing the ball loose as he reached for the line.

Huge surge from the Kangaroos right now.

23rd minute

Sesnational read from Tim Lafai shuts down the Kangaroos’ attempted right-side shift, which included the faciest face ball I’ve ever seen, with Munster snapping his head back out of the way.

And Cleary forces a repeat set with a neat chip and a fortunate bounce.

21st minute

Brian To’o sails high for a bomb, but he’s knocked it on after jumping into Josh Addo-Carr. I’ve seen those called for taken out in the air, but it’s ruled a knock-on this time.

Captain Tedesco goes in

A couple of offside tacklers were called out of the play and Josh Addo-Carr burst through some lazy line defence, then found James Tedesco supporting through the middle as all good fullbacks do. Under the posts.

Ben Hunt’s kick pins Samoa in the corner and the Kangaroos’ defence is aiming up to keep them there.

LATRELL MITCHELL OPENS THE SCORING!

The previous play died with a huge hit from Stephen Crichton on Angus Crichton, but Nathan Cleary went short side on the next, faked a grubber and found a steamrolling Latrell Mitchell, who made Joseph Suaai’i look small as he bumped through him.

Wighton almost dives over from dummy half, and then the grubber into the in-goal is just grounded by Luai before Liam Martin got there.

11th minute

Jarome Luai’s kick was way too deep, and Jack Wighton explodes upfield for the 20m tap, then unleashes Valentine Holmes, who gets up into Samoa’s 30m zone.

First real attacking chance for Australia here.

10th minute

Speaking of chaos, Nathan Cleary’s bomb is untouchable and allowed to bounce, and ends up with Reagan Campbell-Gillard batting back to Ben Hunt, who eventually gets tackled on the last.

Messy start from the Kangaroos.

By Jon Healy

8th minute

Chaos on the last as Jarome Luai dances and bounces across field, but eventually the ball dies with Joseph Suaali’i swarmed by defenders.

By Jon Healy

6th minute

Samoa fires their first shot, with Jarome Luai’s bomb batted back, and Stephen Crichton’s second kick going through the very skinny in-goal.

The Kangaroos get a set restart, but it’s wasted as Ben Hunt throws a forward pass to Cameron Munster. Samoa will attack from halfway.
