Occasional Digest - a story for you

THE heat is normally in the kitchen in the high intensity Masterchef kitchen but it was firing up more on Twitter this week.

MasterChef: The Professionals has been entertaining viewers on BBC One for the last few weeks and has even welcomed a new judge into the fold with Anna Haugh.

But many fans of the show have been calling out the judges for consistently referring to the dishes they have been served by one particular word – and it is getting on their nerves.

The judges have jumped at the chance to label any of the foods they enjoy as ‘unctuous’ and it appears to have got some viewers riled.

According to one viewer, the judges have actually been using the descriptive term incorrectly.

Unctuous come from the Latin meaning ‘to annoint with oil’, essentially meaning the food is oily.

This is who has left Masterchef: The Professionals 2022?

Highlighting how the judges are essentially calling food they think is good as oily was picked up by one fan who pointed out the difference before adding: “Not a pleasant thing. Just saying.'”

One fan was feeling fed up of its exaggerated use on the show, writing: “This year, can we please ditch ‘unctuous’?! I am so over that word!”

Another added: “They are too fond of saying ‘Unctuous’. It is up there with Gregg saying ‘Gooey’.”

Whilst another fan was also left feeling furious at its misuse, penning: “For the love of god, use the word ‘unctuous’ properly!!”

The 15th season of the BBC show sees chefs from all over the country compete over six weeks to become the 2022 champion and impress new judge chef and restaurateur Anna Haugh, Michelin-starred chef Marcus Wareing and MasterChef judge  Gregg Wallace.

It comes after a recent debacle in which viewers felt that one contestant should be ‘instantly disqualified’.

In one round, Anna set the test for two chefs, who needed to fillet a rainbow trout, cook a portion and serve it with a pea and wild garlic puree.

But it was clear that contestant Zarka lacked the cookery knowledge as she failed to plate up a dish full of flavour in 20 minutes so fans felt she should’ve been “instantly disqualified”.
