Occasional Digest - a story for you

THE BBC has plans to flog the massive EastEnders studios in Elstree, to cut production costs.

Reportedly, commercial real estate firm Lambert Smith Hampton has been allocated the huge EastEnders site which is up for grabs.

The Telegraph reported that the huge site, worth £70 million, is a once in a lifetime opportunity to purchase an “iconic” piece of history.

Based in Borehamwood, the site was sold to the BBC in 1984 and was used not just for EastEnders, but also to film Top of the Pops for a decade, until it finished in 2001.

It is thought the sale could “cut operating costs and reduce carbon emissions,” reported the Telegraph.

The BBC is facing a huge drop in funding after the government froze the licence fee, costing £159, for two years. This means the BBC will have to save a whopping £285 million.

Don’t despair, EastEnders isn’t going anywhere, and will continue operations.
